MENTOR Virginia trains mentors and mentees in various sectors, promoting personal development, career advancement, and community engagement, impacting the lives of many young people every day. MENTOR Virginia works collaboratively with MENTOR National and a network of 25 Affiliates across the country to provide training, advocate and elevate the mentoring movement.

Position Overview:  The Executive Director will serve as the chief executive officer of MENTOR Virginia, providing visionary leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight. This is a critical role for someone passionate about mentorship and community development, with a proven track record in nonprofit management, fundraising, and program development. The ideal candidate is an inspiring leader committed to making a positive difference in the lives of young people through the power of mentoring. 

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategy:

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision that aligns with the organization's mission and goals.
  • Lead a team in program development, evaluation, and expansion.
  • Foster a positive organizational culture that promotes teamwork, accountability, and excellence.

Program Oversight:

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of mentorship programs across various sectors.
  • Ensure programs are effective, inclusive, and aligned with best practices.
  • Develop partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations to enhance program reach.

Fundraising:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising and development strategy that aligns with the organization’s mission and goals, with a focus on securing diverse funding sources.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, foundations, corporate partners, and grant-making organizations, working closely with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to engage donors and secure major donations.
  • Work with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to establish fundraising priorities and opportunities, including annual giving campaigns, special events, and grant applications.
  • Provide leadership and direction to staff and volunteers involved in fundraising and development activities, ensuring that all efforts are aligned with the organization’s goals and priorities.
  • Develop and implement donor stewardship plans to maintain strong relationships with donors and secure ongoing support, including regular communication, recognition, and engagement opportunities.
  • Ensure that the organization raises enough funds to meet its annual goals and expand its mission reach and impact, monitoring progress toward fundraising goals and making adjustments as needed.

Financial Management:

  • Develop and oversee the organization’s annual budget, ensuring financial sustainability and transparency.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping to support the month-end duties executed by the bookkeeper. 
  • Ensure all financial obligations are met in a timely manner.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll for all employees.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for the annual financial audit and tax form 990 filing. 
  • Monitor financial performance on an ongoing basis, tracking revenue and expenses and making adjustments as needed to ensure that the organization is operating within its budget.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for revenue growth and cost savings, while also ensuring that the organization remains financially stable and sustainable for the long term.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices in nonprofit financial management and ensure that the organization’s financial policies and procedures are in compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Serve as the primary advocate for the organization, representing MENTOR Virginia at community events, conferences, and meetings.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including board members, community leaders, and partners.
  • Advocate for mentorship and its impact on community development.

Team Management:

  • Recruit, train, develop, and retain a high-performing team, fostering professional development and growth. 
  • Implement policies and procedures that support a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide coaching and mentorship to staff members.

Board Governance:

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop governance policies, strategic plans, and long-term organizational goals.
  • Provide the board with regular updates on organizational performance, challenges, and new opportunities.
  • Facilitate board meetings and support board recruitment, development, and engagement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, social sciences, education, public administration, social sciences, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 3+ years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, preferably in youth development, mentoring, or community-building roles. Proven success in fundraising, including financial management.
  • Strong financial acumen, with experience managing budgets, overseeing audits, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit standards.
  • Experience with strategic planning and program development in nonprofit settings. 
  • Strong understanding of community engagement and partnership building.
  • Excellent public speaking and communication skills, with the ability to inspire audiences and build relationships across sectors.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in both internal practices and external programming.
